Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

What is MBCT?
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based approach that combines cognitive behavioural strategies with mindfulness practices. It was originally developed to help prevent relapse in depression but is now widely used for a range of emotional and stress-related difficulties.

Core Principles of MBCT:

  • Becoming more aware of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in the present moment

  • Learning to relate to experiences with curiosity and acceptance, rather than judgment or avoidance

  • Recognising and stepping out of unhelpful thinking patterns before they escalate

What MBCT Can Help With:

  • Recurrent depression

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Burnout

  • Chronic pain or health conditions

  • Emotional regulation and relapse prevention

How MBCT Works:
MBCT typically involves structured sessions that teach:

  • Formal mindfulness practices (e.g., breath awareness, body scan, mindful movement)

  • Informal mindfulness in daily life

  • Cognitive strategies to manage difficult thoughts and emotions

  • Skills to respond rather than react to life’s challenges

  • An experiential, skills-based approach

  • A combination of guided practice, reflection, and gentle psychoeducation

  • Group or individual formats, typically delivered over 8 weekly sessions

  • Home practice to support learning between sessions

Why Choose MBCT?

MBCT is well-supported by research and recommended by NICE (UK) and other clinical guidelines for preventing depressive relapse. It offers an empowering and compassionate way to manage mental health by cultivating awareness, acceptance, and psychological flexibility.
