Panic

Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear or discomfort that can include physical symptoms like a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest tightness. They can feel overwhelming or frightening—especially if they occur without warning. Over time, the fear of having another panic attack can lead to avoidance and increased anxiety.

When to Seek Help
Psychological support can be helpful if you:

  • Experience frequent or unexpected panic attacks

  • Live in fear of when the next attack might occur

  • Avoid places, situations, or activities due to panic

  • Feel panic is affecting your quality of life, relationships, or independence

How a Clinical Psychologist Can Help
As psychologists, we work collaboratively with you to understand the triggers, patterns, and impact of panic—and to equip you with tools to reduce its intensity and frequency. Therapy may involve:

  • Understanding the cycle of panic and how it is maintained

  • Learning to respond to bodily sensations and fearful thoughts in new ways

  • Developing strategies to manage physical symptoms of anxiety

  • Gradually facing feared situations through structured, supported exposure

  • Addressing underlying stress, trauma, or life events that may contribute to panic

Therapeutic Approaches May Include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)—the gold-standard treatment for panic disorder

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Mindfulness and grounding techniques

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) for self-criticism and shame related to anxiety

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to build flexibility and reduce avoidance

Treatment

What to Expect:

  • A calm, supportive, and non-judgmental space

  • Education about panic and the body’s fear response

  • Skills to reduce the fear of panic itself

  • A gradual, empowering approach to regaining confidence and control

Why Psychological Support Matters
Panic is treatable. With the right support, it’s possible to break free from the fear-panic cycle, reduce avoidance, and build resilience. Therapy can help you feel more grounded, in control, and free to live life on your terms.
