Phobia treatment
Are you fearful of a specific object or situation?
Although it is normal to experience mild anxiety many individuals suffer from debilitating anxiety that impacts on all elements of their lives.
A phobia is severe anxiety related to a specific object or situation. This could be a fear of flying, heights, animals, recieving an injection or seeing blood. Many individuals live their lives with a fear of something or other but for others, their fear causes a severe distress or impacts significantly on a particular part of their lives, such as work or relationships. It is at these times that expert support and guidance should be sought to overcome the problem.

Psychologists can help you to understand your phobia and what is driving it and provide you with strategies to improve your quality of life.

Symptoms related to a phobia include:
-
Feeling anxious, nervous or on edge when faced with the phobic object or situation.
-
Active avoidance of the phobic object or situation.
-
Difficulty relaxing and on high alert when faced with the phobic object or situation.
Treatment to overcome a phobia
Treatment involves understanding anxiety and the different elements of it. Understanding the physical element and ways to control it, understanding the thinking element and ways to control that. However, the main part of treatment for a phobia is to help you to test out the thing that you fear by changing your behaviour. We do this in a step-wise manner, meaning that we won't throw you in a pit of snakes to get over your snake phobia, but we will work through a hierarchy of fears until the phobia no longer impacts on your life and you can begin to live without fear.

As psychologists, we can work with you to look at all of the different things that may be influencing your problem - this could be related to your history or things in your current life and we will provide you with understanding and strategies to help you back on to the path towards feeling better.

Our team can provide Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychotherapy, or other therapies such as ACT, CFT, EMDR, CAT, Psychodynamic. Existential and Integrative Psychotherapy.
